Duke Energy Scam

Our Police Department has been notified of a new scam in the Northern Kentucky area. Someone poses as a Duke Energy employee and tells the victim that they have an outstanding bill. They inform the victim that if they don't pay the bill within the hour, their gas and electric will be turned off. This has already happened twice, in Covington, to small business owners. The victims were directed to go to a local store and put the money on a prepaid card and then to call a phone number they provide. When they call the number, it sounds like a legitimate Duke Energy line. The victim gives the person answering the numbers on the card and the funds are removed. On both instances, the caller had the victim's Duke Energy account number.
