Halloween Safety Tips

October means Halloween and Halloween means Trick or Treat. The City of Highland Heights has designated the Trick or Treat date and time as October 31st from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. Please be mindful of extra traffic and children during these times. Please read the tips below and review them with your children.

Walk Safely
*Cross the street at corners and crosswalks. Use traffic signals where available.
*Be aware of vehicles in the area.
*Put electronic devices and cell phones down and keep heads up and walk, don't run, across the street.
*Always walk on sidewalks and walk facing traffic.
*Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.

Trick or Treat with and Adult
*Children, especially those under the age of 12 should have adult supervision. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, they should stick to familiar areas that are well lit and travel in groups.

Keep Costumes both Creative and Safe
*Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape and if possible, choose light colors.
*Choose face paint and makeup instead of masks which can obstruct vision.
*Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to become more visible to drivers.
*Do not have costumes that are oversized or cumbersome to avoid trips and falls.

Drive Safely on Halloween
*Slow down and be especially alert in residential areas. Children are excited on Halloween and therefore move in unpredictable ways.
*Be aware of your surroundings and children in intersections and on curbs.
*Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly.
*Eliminate any distractions inside your car and concentrate on the road.
*Anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic.

Together we can make Halloween a safe and fun time for all!
