Police News — December 2013

The Holiday season is upon us and there are some things you can do to ensure that it will be a happy one for you and your families.
When shopping
  • Always be aware of your surroundings, vigilant of activity around you and attentive to individuals approaching.
  • Do not allow yourself to be distracted by talking on your cell phone.
  • Try to shop with others and walk in well-traveled areas that are well lit at night.
  • Protect your electronics by not displaying them or leaving them in open view in your car.
  • Do not use ATMs that are located in remote areas.
  • Always lock your car and store all packages out of sight.
  • Do not display large amounts of cash when paying for items and do not display excessive jewelry.
  • Men, carry your wallet in your front pocket or inside jacket pocket. Do not carry in your back pants pocket.
  • Women, carry handbag or purse that you can grasp with a hand or wear a cross over bag that you can keep close to your body.
Shop safely Online

  • Protect your passwords
If you are traveling

  • Get an automatic timer for your lights.
  • Ask a neighbor to watch your home, shovel snow, and park in the driveway from time to time.
  • Don't forget to have mail and newspaper delivery stopped. If it piles up, it is a sure sign you're gone.
If you are out for an evening

  • Turn on lights and a radio or TV so it looks like someone's home.
  • Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave.
  • Don't display gift where they can be seen from outside.

Celebrate Responsibly

  • The holiday season is a time of celebration and revelry. Drinking and driving is a danger to everyone on the road.
  • If you choose to drink alcohol at a party, don't drive. Take a cab or have a designated driver.
  • Have fun, but remember to celebrate responsibly.

The Highland Heights Police Department wishes all citizens a safe and happy Holiday Season.
